WIESBADEN, Germany – Going to the dentist, car repairs and tax preparation \u2013 all events that add to the stress of daily living.<\/p>\n

One of those stressors can be more easily managed, thanks to the expertise at Wiesbaden Family and MWR\u2019s Automotive Skills Center.<\/p>\n

Auto Skills Center Floor Supervisor John Cobb said he takes helping relieve stress personally through positive customer service.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like this job. From the beginning, MWR in general has always treated me really well. The effort I put in comes back to me.,\u201d said Cobb.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like what I\u2019m doing very much,\u201d said Cobb, who has worked for Automotive Skills for more than a decade \u2013 first in Mainz-Kastel and then at the current operation on Clay North. \u201cI like to serve people. I\u2019ve always liked helping people in any way I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an Army brat \u2013 I grew up over here,\u201d Cobb said. The 52-year-old who was born as a U.S. citizen in Panama where his U.S. military father was stationed (in between tours in Germany and Vietnam), grew up in Germany, attended DoDDS and German schools before earning his automotive mechanics degree in Hanau, Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned on Suburus from 1986-89 while earning my mechanics degree,\u201d said Cobb, explaining that working for AAFES for 20 years after that gave him the opportunity to work on and learn about a wide variety of vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of the best times ever,\u201d said Cobb, explaining that he had a chance to work on everything from Fords to Chevrolets. When new cars came out, we had to learn how to fix them \u2013 such as repairing different transmissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also received continuous training \u2013 such as taking welding classes. \u201cThat\u2019s how you get the experience \u2013 learning by doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Helping people in need is just part of his approach to life. \u201cI\u2019ll stop sometimes when I see a Soldier whose car has broken down and needs help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes the job is challenging,\u201d he said, trying to find the best way to assist a customer. \u201cCustomers have come in crying,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I tell them don\u2019t cry over a car \u2013 I\u2019m going to help you. \u2026 I\u2019m always open-hearted. If we can\u2019t help them (such as a complicated vehicle computer issue), we\u2019ll refer them to a host-nation service provider.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn is probably one of our best customer service guys,\u201d said Automotive Skills Center Manager Richard Babcock. \u201cHe\u2019s always in a good mood \u2013 always takes the time to talk to the customer and to explain what he\u2019s done. He\u2019s very thorough \u2013 takes his time (to do it right).<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s good at defusing situations and getting things to work,\u201d said Babcock, adding that positive Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) card feedback is a result.<\/p>\n

The father of two children \u2013 ages 6 and 20 \u2013 has a German wife and lives in Buedingen.<\/p>\n
