There are ways to honor your service and uphold military principles as a Veteran while also taking care of yourself.<\/p>\n

Certain words and concepts have shaped the U.S. military since its founding. In fact, the men and women who fought in the Revolutionary War likely would still recognize the oath taken by those who enlist today.<\/p>\n

Powerful words can inspire people to fight for a common cause and in the case of our country, to gain and preserve freedom. But the words meant to define what it means to be a soldier, marine, sailor, airman or coast guardsman can also make some Veterans think twice about reaching out for help.<\/p>\n

Your service to your unit and our nation constantly required you to put others\u2019 needs above your own. As a result, you may have been forced to \u201csuck it up,\u201d ignore the pain or \u201cdrive on.\u201d No matter what you\u2019ve been through, whether you\u2019ve deployed or not, whether you\u2019ve seen combat or not, you\u2019ve earned the support and resources VA provides.<\/p>\n

Oaths focus on honesty and allegiance<\/h2>\n

Because it\u2019s probably been a while since you took the Oath of Enlistment (or Oath for Commissioned Officers), I\u2019ll remind you what it currently says:<\/p>\n

\u201cI, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the president of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.\u201d<\/p>\n

You probably remember\u2014as I did when I took mine\u2014the enormity of what you were committing to. These aren\u2019t statements you make lightly. You understand you\u2019re representing your country and making a pledge to something bigger than yourself. You take it seriously and know these words will guide you for years, even beyond your time in the service.<\/p>\n

Military core values go beyond oaths<\/h2>\n

No matter your branch, there were other words and concepts that served as a basis for your time in the military. What do you think about now when you hear honor, pride, integrity, responsibility, accountability, courage and commitment?<\/p>\n

You heard these words throughout your service and you likely still live your life by them. I\u2019d like to help you reframe these words so you feel more comfortable asking for support when you want or need it:<\/p>\n
