Zachary Candiani)<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/span><br \/>\n              <a href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2024\/04\/18\/68ec06c1\/original.jpg\" title=\"View original\" target=\"_blank\">VIEW ORIGINAL<\/a><br \/>\n            <\/span><br \/>\n          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. \u2014 In preparation for the direst of days on the homeland front, a dozen Citizen-Soldiers recently enhanced their technical acumen on unmanned aviation systems after completing a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers qualification course.<\/p>\n<p>The training helps ensure the Army National Guard members \u2014 hailing from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive response teams \u2014 can safely and effectively operate UAS in the National Airspace System.<\/p>\n<p>While Soldiers are familiar with deploying the platforms after hurricanes and wildfires, the training represents a new Army Guard aviation paradigm: uncrewed aircraft as an enabler of CBRNE incident response efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will provide real-time, live-streaming digital video and employ onboard sensors to relay its surrounding environmental conditions over a dedicated network,\u201d said Army Maj. Kyle McGaha, a CBRNE operations lead with the National Guard Bureau who attended the training.<\/p>\n<p>He said UAS are crucial to expedite \u201cthe planning to conduct primary and secondary searches for ambulatory and non-ambulatory victims\u201d while helping to ensure Guard members can safely perform tasks in contaminated environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese platforms mitigate the need to put our Soldiers in harm\u2019s way, like radiological exposure, for example, while conducting site assessments,\u201d McGaha said. \u201cLarger aircraft can be used for missions such as personnel evacuation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Army Guard members trained on quadcopters, a prelude to using R80D SkyRaider aerial systems in real situations. The training covered regulations and coordination with local authorities for airspace approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur training method is derived from Army aviation and Federal Aviation Administration handbooks and [emphasizes] hands-on tasks to produce mission-ready crew members out of the gate,\u2019\u201d said Chris Kernan, an aviation program manager with the Army engineers.<\/p>\n<p>National Guard officials said CBRNE teams, as part of a larger Homeland Response Force, respond to incidents within six hours, conducting \u201ccommand and control, search and extraction, mass casualty decontamination, and medical stabilization to save lives and mitigate human suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Sgt. 1st Class Horacio Morfin, a planning noncommissioned officer with the California Army National Guard\u2019s 185th Military Police Battalion, 49 Military Police Brigade, the training served as an indoctrination into the increasingly important world of uncrewed aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main takeaway from this course is that this is just the beginning of our training,\u201d Morfin said. \u201cTo master piloting these UAS, we have to stay current on flight hours and [operational] planning while learning about payloads and software required for these systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Strange, a course instructor, said collaborating and ultimately integrating with the Army Guard is sure to pay off dividends when the time comes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProviding this course to our National Guard Soldiers is a testament to our commitment to excellence, unity and shared responsibility for the protection of this nation,\u201d Strange said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">For more National Guard news<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheNationalGuard\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Guard Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usnationalguard\" target=\"_blank\">National Guard X<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A dozen Citizen-Soldiers from Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and high-yield Explosive response teams recently completed a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers qualification course at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, on operating unmanned aviation systems, enabling the Army National Guard members to fly the R80D Skyraider, pictured here.
