U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Ralph D. Kolb, 19, \u00a0was buried with full military honors at McGehee Cemetery in Southeastern Arkansas\u00a0, Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Kolb was assigned to the 343rd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force as radio operator on a B-24 Liberator bomber during \u00a0WWII. On August 1, 1943, during Operation TIDAL WAVE, his bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in Ploesti, Romania. Romanians in the area buried the remains of servicemembers in a local cemetery. His remains were not identified following the war.<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-image single\">\n<figure class=\"photo cur-photo\">\n          <span class=\"centered-image\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"img-container\"><br \/>\n              <a class=\"rich-text-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2023\/06\/15\/aac20c7d\/original.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>              <\/a><br \/>\n                          <\/span><br \/>\n          <\/span><figcaption>\n                        <span class=\"image-caption\"><br \/>\n              <span class=\"caption-text\"><br \/>\n                Staff Sgt. Cody Voye)<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/span><br \/>\n              <a href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2023\/06\/15\/aac20c7d\/original.jpg\" title=\"View original\" target=\"_blank\">VIEW ORIGINAL<\/a><br \/>\n            <\/span><br \/>\n          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over 79 years later, on September 14, 2022, Kolb\u2019s remains were accounted for. \u00a0Kolb\u2019s remain were identified \u00a0by scientists from the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) using anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA (Y-STR) analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Kolb\u2019s nephew, Harold Kolb Jr., it welcomed the news that his uncle was finally accounted for:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to finally have him home where he belongs,\u201d said Harold.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During the funeral service\u00a0eight Soldiers from 66th Forward Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment, 75th Field Artillery Brigade, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, performed duties as pallbearers, rifle team, bugler, and flag team.
