U.S. Army garrisons around the world look to MWR to provide a full spectrum of fitness, recreational and support elements to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for service members.

That is no different for U.S. Army Garrison Poland, which transitioned from an Area Support Group to a full garrison on March 21, 2023.

“We are providing quality of life programs, services and facilities … while promoting all aspects of MWR in support of Soldier readiness and resiliency,” said Casey Malloy, NAF Support Chief for U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Directorate of Family and MWR.

Malloy, who has been detailed since January of this year to work as the Installation Management Command-Europe G9 Family and MWR C2 Director at Camp Kosciuszko in Poznan, Poland, said the garrison serves 11 Army Material Command (AMC) sites called Garrison Support Elements (formerly known as Forward Operating Sites).

“In addition to establishing the Garrison MWR program, some of our other objectives are to develop a unified strategic plan to support U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s operations in Eastern Europe, develop MWR short and long term facility construction plans and optimize the use of host nation resources,” said Malloy, adding, “In short, we are working to improve the quality of life for Soldiers each and every day.”

“Currently there are four recreation specialists deployed to different locations planning and executing events and activities,” said Malloy, who helped advance MWR programs for IMCOM-Europe in Poland and assisted with the transition from the ASG Poland to Garrison Poland.

Because each Garrison Support Element is different, living conditions for Soldiers also varies, Malloy said. “Living conditions for Soldiers attached to training sites are typically in tents (while) others may be in more permanent structures. It is a mix.”

Malloy, who is expecting to return to Wiesbaden in mid-July, said working with his Polish and NATO partners has been rewarding.

“I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience here and working alongside our Polish partners. It has been a fantastic and humbling experience getting to know them professionally and personally – and to learn about their culture,” Malloy said. “They are hard workers, proud about their heritage and have taught me a lot.”

Malloy added that USAG Poland is currently recruiting for a number of positions through USAJOBS.
