Marcus Hunter, garrison commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. David A. Rio, garrison senior enlisted leader, toured the buildings April 9 to see firsthand the construction that may be replicated at other sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we continue [the renovations], we want to make sure that we\u2019re getting good expenditure and we\u2019re getting the right product for our community,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p>The current project is part of a large-scale renovation process that aims to benefit community members for many years to come.<\/p>\n<p>In fiscal years 2024-26, the garrison looks to renovate at least 135 Army family homes and then two unaccompanied housing buildings in fiscal 2025-26.<\/p>\n<p>Additional renovations are scheduled for fiscal 2027 and beyond, which will include more than 70 homes and one unaccompanied housing building.<\/p>\n<p>Rio said that Kite Peak will be the first fully renovated neighborhood to reopen since the process began in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis housing was built in the \u201890s, so being able to come in and modernize it really increases the quality of life for our incoming residents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-image photo-slideshow\">\n<figure class=\"photo cur-photo\">\n          <span class=\"centered-image\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"img-container\"><br \/>\n              <a class=\"rich-text-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2024\/04\/16\/092b1c8c\/original.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Col. Marcus Hunter, garrison commander, toured a 20-home renovation project to see firsthand the construction that may be replicated at other sites as the garrison plans to roll out several more upgrades across its inventory.<br \/>\n                <span class=\"caption-author\"> (Photo Credit: Sean Kimmons)<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/span><br \/>\n              <a href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2024\/04\/16\/2eb38679\/original.jpg\" title=\"View original\" target=\"_blank\">VIEW ORIGINAL<\/a><br \/>\n            <\/span><br \/>\n          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jesus Chavarria, housing division chief at the Directorate of Public Works, said many updated features inside the homes were a direct result of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/274233\/army_launches_2024_tenant_satisfaction_survey\" target=\"_blank\">tenant satisfaction survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those features include new appliances and improved kitchen layouts, recessed lighting and dimmer switches, pull-out faucets, and curved shower curtain rods to provide more room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe features that [tenants] have asked for are what we\u2019re trying to incorporate into everything to make it a little bit homier,\u201d Chavarria said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that feedback remains important for the garrison as it continues to enhance its housing options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf nobody tells us [of any issues], we\u2019re going to think that the status quo is still good when it\u2019s not, and we need to change it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Perry Cannon, who oversees the housing operations branch, said the aging sewer and water lines in the Kite Peak neighborhood will also be replaced to further provide safe and quality housing to residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is their home; this is where they\u2019re going to live,\u201d Cannon said. \u201cSo, we have to give them a good place to live because if Soldiers are happy at home, they\u2019re going to be happy at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter also noted the garrison\u2019s motto, \u201cThe Army\u2019s home in the Land of the Rising Sun,\u201d in describing how these projects will take care of the organization\u2019s people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing speaks more to [living up to] that [motto] than your literal home, where you live,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018People first\u2019 means starting at that very first starting point \u2013 their home. And so, putting people first ensures that their home is as nice as we can possibly offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said he appreciated the DPW workforce for its ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions for community members.<\/p>\n<p>While contractors may be doing the remodeling, the colonel said DPW employees still help design and certify that the construction meets the Army\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey make it a very smooth and efficient process, and that\u2019s hard when you think of the scope and the number of units that we are doing,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m always very impressed by the work that they do, and I extend a deepfelt thanks and appreciation to their incredible talents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related links:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/RisingSun\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army Garrison Japan news<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/japan\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">USAG Japan official website<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1 \/ 4 Show Caption + Hide Caption \u2013 Col.
