The decision was made swiftly to engage and neutralize these threats.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise wrapped up on May 10, with a multinational combined arms live-fire exercise (CALFEX) in Ben Ghilouf. Distinguished visitors from the U.S. and partner nations, including U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Todd R. Directed by SETAF-AF, under the guidance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africom.mil\/what-we-do\/exercises\/african-lion\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Africa Command<\/a>, the exercise extends through May 31, spanning Ghana, Morocco and Senegal with over 8,100 participants from 27 nations and NATO contingents.<\/p>\n<p>As the CALFEX progressed, precise reconnaissance allowed U.S. Army Soldiers, U.S. Marines and members of the Tunisian Armed Forces to launch a coordinated barrage of artillery and rockets at the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>Infantrymen from 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.com\/maryland\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland National Guard<\/a>, artillery forces from 2nd Battalion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/3760160\/new-york-army-guard-soldiers-heading-to-north-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">258th Field Artillery<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalguard.com\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\">New York National Guard<\/a>, and Marines from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marforres.marines.mil\/Units\/Force-Headquarters-Group\/3rd-ANGLICO\/\" target=\"_blank\">3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (3rd ANGLICO)<\/a>, Marine Corps Forces Reserve, worked alongside Tunisian forces, demonstrating enhanced interoperability.<\/p>\n<p>High mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) provided by 4th Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery Regiment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.com\/texas\" target=\"_blank\">Texas National Guard<\/a>, repeatedly fired upon the enemy\u2019s high value target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marks the first time in African Lion\u2019s history, the HIMARS was used in Tunisia,\u201d said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Kendra Tippett, chief of plans and exercises (G6), SETAF-AF. \u201cIt\u2019s a major testament to our partnership with the Tunisians and demonstrates our combined commitment to regional security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joint terminal attack controllers directed close air support for ground forces to further suppress the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAir and ground integration creates trust and confidence with the host nation and other partner nations,\u201d said U.S. Marine Sgt. Paratroopers, who planted the flag in the unforgiving desert sand, saluted proudly nearby, after descending from hundreds of meters above to bring the exercise to a close.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The successful live-fire exercise we just witnessed is visual proof of the importance of African Lion,&#8221; said Wasmund. &#8220;This type of training has a tremendous impact on the service members involved. It increases their readiness to respond to crises and threats, and it keeps progressing our partnerships in the region. I&#8217;ve watched us make the transition from training that focused at the individual level, to where we are now building and working on collective readiness across countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About African Lion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2024 marks the 20th anniversary of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africom.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army Africa Command&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0premier and largest annual, combined, joint exercise African Lion.
