For the Soldiers of the Georgia Army National Guard\u2019s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the early June movement to Fort Stewart for annual training was a different experience. In recent years, thousands of \u201cVolunteer\u201d brigade personnel moved vehicles and equipment into the field to sleep in tents and conduct weeks of training scenarios and multi-purpose ranges. But this season, only a small percentage camped out for a week in the forest, while the rest remained in barracks on base.<\/p>\n

This is because approximately 1,800 personnel of the Macon-based brigade are deployed around the world in locations including Kosovo and the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, leaving close to 1,000 of the remaining Soldiers to attend 18 days of annual training.<\/p>\n

For the rear detachment brigade commander, Colonel Luke W. Gaspard, this is an opportunity to return to the basics. While speaking with one of the battalions, he laid out his priorities for the Soldiers who were new to the brigade or didn\u2019t deploy.<\/p>\n

Gaspard highlighted that the remaining Soldiers need to support the forward-deployed units and remain ready in case they are also needed to mobilize. Secondly, he emphasized that Soldiers need to train on individual tasks and attend necessary schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever your training requirements are, this is the time to focus on yourself,\u201d said Gaspard. \u201cGet right as a Soldier so that way when the forward returns, you’re not leaving to go to school when it’s time to be a team leader, a squad leader, or platoon sergeant.\u201d<\/p>\n

While many Soldiers anticipate their opportunity to move into their next leadership role, many Soldiers attending annual training have already been exposed to increased responsibility.<\/p>\n

Specialist Ryan Higley, a medic with Headquarters Company, 177th Brigade Engineer Battalion attended his third year of annual training with the brigade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year we are dealing with a lot of understaffing as far as the medical section goes,\u201d Higley said. \u201cThey call me the senior specialist and I\u2019ve been passing on the stuff I\u2019ve learned to junior medics.<\/p>\n

In the dining facility, Sergeant First Class Ronnie Jackson, a senior culinary specialist from the 148th Brigade Support Battalion, empowered young leaders to supervise an entire kitchen of junior cooks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s my job, I train cooks,\u201d said Jackson. \u201cBy the time they leave here, they should be ready to be a noncommissioned officer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because of the demand for cooks in other units, Jackson trains a kitchen limited to the rank of specialists (E4) and below. Jackson assigned Specialist Ashanti Dudley, a prison employee from Dublin, Ga., to oversee the new Soldiers during annual training.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to make sure everybody\u2019s here on time, they\u2019re in the right uniform and prepping the food on time,\u201d said Dudley. She was also tasked with supervising the Soldier\u2019s readiness requirements. \u201cI\u2019ve also gotta make sure they do drivers\u2019 training and their weapons qualifications too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ranges and readiness were the main focus of annual training in Fort Stewart, with Soldiers processing through the Soldier Readiness Program event consisting of medical stations, administrative updates, and other services necessary to create and maintain deployable Soldiers.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing in the reserve component, administrative and medical readiness is probably one of the most important things we can do,\u201d said Captain Andrew Silva, a Georgia Army National Guard personnel officer. \u201cWe\u2019ve brought all the key people that we need to effect that readiness into one place. We put the Soldiers through a dedicated process to see all of those people.\u201d<\/p>\n

While much of the individual Soldier readiness events were conducted in Fort Stewart, that phase was only a week and a half of the entirety of annual training, which continued at the units’ home armories as well. Upon their return to the cities and towns their formations conduct regular drills, the Soldiers will prioritize cleaning, organizing, and maintaining their equipment.<\/p>\n

Gaspard highlighted the importance of this priority while addressing 48th IBCT Soldiers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet’s start getting everything put back into place so that when the time comes to start training we know where our equipment is,\u201d said Gaspard. \u201cAs long as I have my Soldiers and I have my equipment, I can accomplish my mission.
