CAMP ZAMA, Japan \u2013 U.S. Army Japan personnel celebrated the Army\u2019s 249th birthday last week with some friendly competition in various sports activities.<\/p>\n

Winning teams of the seven events received certificates of excellence during an awards ceremony here Wednesday at Yano Sports Field.<\/p>\n

Col. Terry A. Butcher, deputy commander of USARJ, said the ceremony was intended to recognize the efforts from everyone who participated in the activities that began June 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy virtue of you taking part in these events, and especially by virtue of those of you who won, you represent the best of us,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cYou represent the best of the Army during our birthday week.\u201d<\/p>\n

With dozens of Soldiers in a horseshoe formation around him, Butcher then awarded the certificates to representatives from the teams that won each of the events.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, it just brings me a lot of pride that I am able to stand up here in front of you and present these awards to all of you,\u201d he said. \u201cAgain, congratulations one and all. It\u2019s good to have you out here.\u201d<\/p>\n
