{"id":20213,"date":"2023-07-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=20213"},"modified":"2023-07-27T06:41:50","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T06:41:50","slug":"kadena-ab-aces-dispersed-operations-during-northern-edge-23-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=20213","title":{"rendered":"Kadena AB aces dispersed operations during Northern Edge 23-2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p><strong class=\"article-detail-dateline\">KADENA AIR BASE, Japan (AFNS) &#8212; \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. service members integrated with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mod.go.jp\/gsdf\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">Japan Self-Defense Forces<\/a><\/strong>, French air and space forces and other allies and partners to enhance Agile Combat Employment capabilities from dispersed locations during Northern Edge 23-2, July 2-21.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Staging out of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kadena.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kadena Air Base<\/a><\/strong>, the \u201cKeystone of the Pacific.\u201d afforded U.S. forces and partner nations the opportunity to work through interoperability challenges across joint, multinational and multi-domain operations in support of the shared security objectives in the Indo-Pacific region.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cNorthern Edge 23-2 was a success in challenging our forces to exercise distributed operations in the field rather than simple simulations, increasing proficiency and force durability,\u201d said U.S. Air Force <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kadena.af.mil\/About-Us\/Biographies\/Display\/Article\/2899891\/nicholas-b-evans\/\" target=\"_blank\">Col. Nicholas Evans<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.5af.pacaf.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/1483830\/18th-wing\/\" target=\"_blank\">18th Wing<\/a><\/strong> commander. \u201cWorking together with our Japanese counterparts enables us to bolster our real-world training capabilities, which enhances our readiness and lethality.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The large-scale exercise tested participants\u2019 mission capabilities to include command and control, movement and maneuverability, hub and spoke distribution, combat search and rescue and the testing and experimentation of new technology.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>From infancy, multilateral partners gave inputs into the operational design of the exercise and continued to participate all the way to its culmination.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cBy training with our partners, we learn how to work through some operational challenges as a collective force and get closer to our goal of a truly interoperable, joint and multinational partnership,\u201d said U.S. Air Force Maj. John Della Pia, 18th Operational Support Squadron Wing weapons and tactics chief.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>NE 23-2 also achieved the joint force air component commander\u2019s vision by deploying more than 5,000 personnel, 90 fighters and 20 tankers to 10 locations throughout the region.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cOur Airmen essentially deployed \u2013 physically moving between different locations, picking up a pack and sleeping bag, showing up to a place that they might not have everything they need and learned how to work through those struggles in real-time,\u201d said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Scott Darden, 336th Fighter Generation Squadron maintenance project officer during NE 23-2. \u201cThe JASDF were great partners and were 100% willing to help and were key to our success.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>An integral aspect of NE 23-2 was exercising distributed operations through a centralized hub and dispersed spokes, demonstrating greater agility and ability to outpace an adversary\u2019s actions and complicate targeting cycles through movement and maneuverability across a wide area.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cPlanning and coordinating an exercise on this scale introduces some incredible challenges \u2013 in terms of the sheer number of airplanes, the amount of fuel required to keep airplanes flying and the outstanding work of our logistics teams to ensure both our hub and spokes were successful in their missions,\u201d Della Pia said.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The range of operations provided by spoke operations in Hyakuri and Tsuiki Air Bases, allowed additional U.S. Air Force commands to validate new tactics, techniques and procedures.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Such coordination resulted in four <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/478441\/f-35a-lightning-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-35A Lightning II<\/a><\/strong>s completing a historic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacaf.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3452044\/usaf-f-35as-demonstrate-endurance-and-reach-during-northern-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\">endurance mission<\/a><\/strong> by flying for 10 hours before joining allied forces in the air to participate in a tactical training mission over the Indo-Pacific region.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cNorthern Edge provides opportunities for us to train like we will fight \u2013 as a joint and coalition force,\u201d said U.S. Air Force Capt. Rachel Self, 355th Fighter Squadron F-35A pilot.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Another new capability tested, in conjunction with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amc.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air Mobility Command<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s concurrent full spectrum exercise <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3468805\/amcs-largest-global-exercise-proves-success-in-indo-pacific-theater\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mobility Guardian 23<\/a><\/strong>, was the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ang.af.mil\/Media\/Article-Display\/Article\/3467866\/connected-battlespace-modernizes-the-fight-in-the-indo-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">Real-Time Information in the Cockpit<\/a><\/strong> system, that provides intelligence and C2 capabilities to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/1529736\/kc-135-stratotanker\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC-135 Stratotanker<\/a><\/strong> crews. This technology provides operations which streamline aircraft tracking and proficiency on-time, on-target across vast distances.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>As Kadena AB continues to demonstrate its strategic importance as a hub facilitating multiple, multi-faceted exercises, and continue daily operations to meet mission objectives, the 18th Wing reinforces its vital position to ensuring long-lasting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s been a herculean effort to ensure that our daily operations haven\u2019t suffered as a result [of Northern Edge],\u201d Della Pia said. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to forget that we have normal operations and taskings that occur daily, and it\u2019s no exception during an operation like this.
