{"id":211404,"date":"2024-06-27T13:13:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T13:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=211404"},"modified":"2024-06-27T14:13:45","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T14:13:45","slug":"strategic-systems-programs-promotes-workforce-modernization-at-nuclear-triad-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=211404","title":{"rendered":"Strategic Systems Programs Promotes Workforce Modernization at Nuclear Triad Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p><span>Representatives from across the nuclear triad, including Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) and industry partners, advocated for increased focus on workforce needs, small business collaboration, and mentorship programs throughout the nuclear enterprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>SSP\u2019s Director of Plans and Programs Kelly Lee\u2014also a member of the Senior Executive Service\u2014addressed areas SSP is modernizing in order to maintain the reliability, accuracy, and safety of the current sea-based strategic weapon system \u2013 known as Trident II D5 Life Extension (D5LE), while concurrently developing the future strategic weapon system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to achieve Sea-Based Strategic Deterrence 2084, SSP has developed a strategic plan that outlines our program priorities and the key enablers to support the modernization of the strategic weapons system to counter emerging and future threats,\u201d said Ms. Lee, who oversees the development and execution of the program plans and budget for the strategic weapons system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Modernization touches every inch of the nuclear enterprise; however, Ms. Lee narrowed that scope into three discreet themes: modernizing SSP\u2019s workforce, modernizing industry and infrastructure, and modernizing the nuclear triad through collaboration across the services.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Aligning with the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review\u2019s call to action to develop a \u201ccapable, motivate [nuclear enterprise] workforce,\u201d Ms. Lee zeroed in on people as the real strategic assets for both the Navy and Air Force.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWe need a good talent pipeline to support sustainment and modernization,\u201d she said.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWithout people, there are no weapons systems.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWe are at an inflection point for industry and government as we modernize,\u201d added Jeffrey Duncan, Vice President of Systems Engineering at JRC Integrated Systems, Inc., advocating for industry to invest in bringing in employees new to the nuclear enterprise.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWe need to introduce new people into the ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LSU Shreveport\u2019s selection for these annual gatherings is not a coincidence. Barksdale Air Force Base, home of AFGSC, is located right next door and maintains close ties with the Shreveport-Bossier City community. This close proximity is a daily reminder that strategic deterrence is a local, as well as a national, endeavor.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux, kicked off the symposium by reminding attendees how important the nuclear triad is to the nation and the close-knit local community.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cYou are here to make sure we keep peace in the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>AFGSC\u2019s responsibility for two of the three legs of the nuclear triad \u2013 the strategic bomber force and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104466\/lgm-30g-minuteman-iii\/\">intercontinental ballistic missiles<\/a> &#8211; makes it a crucial pillar of the nation\u2019s national security strategy. SSP, the Navy command that provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for the sea-based leg of the nation\u2019s nuclear triad, collaborates closely with the Air Force to manage the increased demands of modernization and development that both services face.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cStrategic deterrence is a team sport, and all three legs are needed to win,\u201d said Ms. Lee.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe entire team must work together to leverage each other\u2019s strengths and apply lessons learns.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<br \/>Hosted by LSU\u2019s Strategy Alternatives Consortium (SAC), the Nuclear Triad Symposium\u2019s mission is \u201cto advance national policies, plans, strategies, resources, and professionals\u201d in the realm of strategic deterrence, specifically through exploring the role of the U.S. Air Forces\u2019 strategic deterrent history and present-day mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A credible, effective nuclear deterrent is essential to our national security and the security of U.S. allies. Deterrence remains a cornerstone of national security policy in the 21st century.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Strategic Systems Programs provides training, systems, equipment, facilities and personnel responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Resources\/Fact-Files\/Display-FactFiles\/Article\/2169285\/trident-ii-d5-missile\/#:~:text=Length%3A%2044%20feet%20(13.41%20meters,miles%2C%20or%207%2C360%20km).\">Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) Trident II (D5LE) Strategic Weapon System<\/a>.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>SLBMs are one leg of the nation\u2019s strategic nuclear deterrent Triad that also includes the U.S. Air Force\u2019s intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) and nuclear-capable bombers. \u00a0Each part of the Triad provides unique capabilities and advantages.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<br \/>SLBMs make up the majority \u2013 approximately 70 percent \u2013 of the U.S.\u2019s deployed strategic nuclear deterrent Triad.
