The PSA is just one part of VA\u2019s ongoing effort to educate on the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.va.gov\/assets\/pdf\/survey\/colorectalcancerscreeningflyerv2.pdf\">colorectal cancer (CRC) screening<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image hd-bcve-wrapper hd-bcve-wrapper-js is--youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" data-id=\"05X-VNYfAjw\">\n\t\t<button class=\"play-button\" aria-label=\"Play video\"><\/button><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stay Ahead | Early Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/05X-VNYfAjw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cColorectal cancer screening is so important. It detects polyps early, preventing cancer, and finds cancer when it may still be curable,\u201d said Dr. Jason Dominitz, VA national executive director of gastroenterology. \u201cColorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in America and this PSA reflects VA\u2019s dedication to educating Veterans about the importance of regular screenings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Stay Ahead\u2019 PSA was produced out of Palo Alto VA by <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.va.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA\u2019s National Oncology Program (NOP) and the National Colorectal Cancer Screening Program<\/a>, and is recognized by the San Francisco\/Northern California Chapter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emmysf.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences<\/a> in its spot announcement award category.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expanding access to colorectal cancer screening<\/h2>\n<p>In an effort to expand access to colorectal cancer screening, VA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.va.gov\/colorectal-cancer-screening-fit.html\" target=\"_blank\">fecal immunochemical test (FIT)<\/a> program delivers FIT kits to the homes of tens of thousands of eligible Veterans, providing increased access to high quality and safe CRC screening.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, VA <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-expands-health-care-benefits-veterans-cancer\/\">announced<\/a> plans to expand screening for colorectal cancer by providing FIT tests to more than 1 million Veterans nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>While at-home screening offers an alternative to colonoscopy for CRC screening, providing high quality colonoscopies is also critical for Veterans who need the procedure. In service to that commitment, VA <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/122055\/va-colonoscopies-ai-increase-polyp-detection\/\">deployed<\/a> over 350 artificial intelligence computer-aided detection devices to over 140 VA facilities to increase the detection and removal of precancerous polyps. More than 200,000 colonoscopies have already been performed with these devices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>VA encourages Veterans to reach out to their VA provider for support wherever they may be in their cancer care journey.
