After 20 years in the service, he found himself battling chronic lower back pain. Numerous referrals and appointments later, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig\u2019s Disease.\u00a0Hanson and his family set out to navigate this unexpected life chapter alongside VA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept falling and felt like I was losing my memory. I couldn\u2019t go where I wanted. I couldn\u2019t see friends anymore. I couldn\u2019t even go to church. I was slowly starting to lose my independence,\u201d Hanson shared.<\/p>\n<p>VA took the initiative\u00a0to ensure every resource available was there to support Hanson, including providing his family with a specially modified vehicle that enables Hanson to enjoy the freedom of mobility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVA moved quickly,\u201d said wife Cindy Hanson. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have to wait more than two weeks for all the medical devices. Everyone was so responsive, fast and courteous. I didn\u2019t think we were going to have this experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThis is a journey they don\u2019t have to navigate on their own.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Christopher Rodriguez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/west-texas-health-care\/locations\/george-h-obrien-jr-department-of-veterans-affairs-medical-center\/\">George H. O\u2019Brien Jr. VA<\/a> prosthetic representative, was an integral staff member in connecting John with VA automobile allowance and adaptive equipment benefits to help manage his condition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Thumbs-up_r1-2.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Air Force Veteran John Hanson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are more than happy to help. We have so many resources to help manage the impacts of this condition. We want all our Veterans and their family members to know this is a journey they don\u2019t have to navigate on their own,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<p>To provide ease in his home, VA helped supply bathroom and shower modifications, physical therapy lifters, a power wheelchair and sleeping devices to cater to Hanson\u2019s specific physical needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVA has been so proactive. We feel fully supported and cared for,\u201d said Cindy. \u201cVA is on a mission to take care of Veterans. Our experience has shown us that\u2019s exactly what they are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To continue his rehabilitation with Rodriquez\u2019s support, the Hansons applied for a specially equipped vehicle that features lifts, ramps and seats designed specifically to work with Hanson\u2019s devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of my treatment is my social support. I can finally get out of the house. I get to see my children and attend services once again. It\u2019s like I\u2019m living life again,\u201d John said.<\/p>\n<p>Pictured above, Open Road Mobility representative Sheldon Stagg, Cindy and John receive the keys to a brand new and specially equipped ALS vehicle.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cVA has opened doors for me.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>In 2008, VA announced that Lou Gehrig\u2019s Disease, also known as ALS, would be listed as a presumptive compensable illness for all Veterans with 90 or more days of continuous active service.<\/p>\n<p>John said VA has been an ally that has stood by his side. \u201cI can\u2019t say enough about how we have been treated. VA has opened doors for me. I don\u2019t think we can ask for more.
