MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (AFNS) — \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program<\/a><\/strong> visited Minot Air Force Base Aug. 21.\u00a0
\u00a0
The AFW2 team, including program managers and ambassadors, visited Airmen from the Fifth Security Forces Squadron and the 91st Security Forces Group. They shared stories from their careers and how they came to be a part of the AFW2 Roadshow team.\u00a0

\u201cThese ambassadors aren\u2019t on a payroll,\u201d said retired Senior Master Sgt. Carlos Villarreal, AFW2 outreach ambassador coordinator. \u201cThey are wounded warriors who are in recovery and want to share their story.\u201d\u00a0

AFW2 is a program that provides support for wounded, ill, injured Airmen, Guardians<\/a><\/strong>, caregivers and their families, as they recover and transition back to duty or to civilian life.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

More than 8,400 wounded warriors, their families, and\/or caregivers are being supported by the AFW2 program. AFW2 is functionally aligned under the Air Force Warrior Care Division<\/a><\/strong> and operationally managed by the Air Force Personnel Center<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As part of the program, the Roadshow Ambassador event provided the AFW2 team an opportunity to teach Minot AFB Airmen about their expansive list of support systems<\/a><\/strong>. It also allowed the ambassadors to share their story of trauma, resiliency and overcoming their hardest times.\u00a0

\u201cI was suicidal, depressed,\u201d said retired Staff Sgt. Kijuan Amey, AFW2 ambassador. \u201cI kept telling myself I can never have a family, and now that I\u2019m blind, even if I do have a family, I won\u2019t be able to see my kids grow up. But I didn\u2019t give up. This program isn\u2019t just to make sure people like me can survive, it\u2019s to help us thrive.\u201d\u00a0

AFW2\u2019s goal is to help Airmen obtain a refined, simplified transition back to duty or into civilian life, ensuring they are well-equipped to manage challenges because of their wounds, injuries or illnesses.\u00a0

\u201cI may have lost my sight, but I never lost my vision,\u201d Amey said. \u201cThe only thing that can stop you is you. So many people suffer in silence. Don\u2019t suffer, we\u2019re here to help you.\u201d\u00a0

Programs like AFW2 are how the Air Force cares for and serves its most valuable resource; its Airmen. This visit ensured that Minot AFB Airmen know about this program and all the help it can offer them and their families.\u00a0

\u201cI\u2019m ready now,\u201d said retired Master Sgt. Kingsley Scott, AFW2 ambassador. \u201cIt\u2019s taken me years to be able to tell my story. This program has enabled me to heal in my own way.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
