Most training and global travel came to a halt; recruiting went virtual; some deployments were cut short or sidelined amid outbreaks.

Operating in a new and ever evolving environment to include school and workplace closures, implementation of telework policies, and reduction in services became common practice not only in the civilian sector but also within the gates of military installations situated around the world.

IMCOM mission, while impacted, could not just come to a complete halt. Army garrisons are communities that provide many of the same types of services expected from any small city. Fire, police, housing and childcare are just some of the things IMCOM does in Army communities every day.

As a support formation of the U.S. Army responsible for the day-to-day management of Army installations around the globe, the entire IMCOM force collectively did their part to keep Soldiers, Families, Civilians informed and operations running.

“IMCOM’s mission providing Base Operations and Facility Sustainment is critical to Army Readiness,” said Davis D. Tindoll, Jr. Director, U.S. Army Installation Management Command – Sustainment Directorate. “Our tasks must be carried out regardless of multiple challenges and circumstances. We provide exceptional base operations during wartime, peacetime natural disasters and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Our ID-Sustainment command teams, managers, and workforce adapted quickly and efficiently in an ever-evolving atmosphere of uncertainty to maintain continuous service support to our installations. I could not be prouder of what they accomplished, given the previously unseen challenges and difficulties the pandemic brought to their gates. Mission failure was not an option, and they performed with great success.”

The Superior Unit Award is awarded in peacetime to any unit of the Army which displays outstanding meritorious performance of a difficult and challenging mission carried out under extraordinary circumstances. All garrison units within IMCOM received the award and will attach the streamer to their organizational colors.

IMCOM is organized into five directorates, which serve as the intermediate echelon between IMCOM Headquarters and the garrison, these directorates are:

IMCOM Training, based at Joint Base Langley–Eustice, Virginia and directly supports Army Training and Doctrine Command, the United States Military Academy, Fort Hamilton and the Army War College.

IMCOM Readiness, based at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), North Carolina and directly supports Forces Command, Army Test and Evaluation Command (White Sands Missile Range) and Army Reserve Command.

IMCOM Sustainment, located at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama and directly supports the Army Materiel Command, Military District of Washington, Army Test and Evaluation Command, Army Medical Command and U.S. Army South.

IMCOM Europe, based in Germany and supports U.S. Army Europe.

IMCOM Pacific, located in Hawaii and supports U.S. Army Pacific.

The award citation on the award reads:

“During the period 1 February 2020 to 31 December 2021, United States Army Installation Management Command demonstrated superior performance and devotion to duty. Conducting exceptionally difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances that resulted in safe communities and preservation of lives across military communities throughout 75 installations, covering more than 13 million acres, in 17 time zones, and 12 countries. The collective effort and selflessness of each individual and unit to serving Soldiers, civilians, families, and retirees will have a lasting impact for years to come. The dedication and outstanding performance of United States Army Installation Management Command is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, and the United States Army.”

<img decoding="async" alt="PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - During an all-hands meeting and awards ceremony at Picatinny Arsenal, July 17, Lt.
