This Spotlight <\/em>is on Roel Laugs, fire prevention inspector for U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, who blends his love of firefighting with extra emergency volunteering as well as bringing cheer to children.]<\/p>\n

BRUNSSUM, Netherlands \u2013 On an average day, Roel Laugs, fire prevention inspector at U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Benelux-Brunssum, the Netherlands, spends his time enforcing fire safety procedures through building and room inspections. His regular trainings, to include installation protection exercises, serve to build relationships with off-post emergency personnel and test response times and efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day is a different day,\u201d said Laugs, explaining how an unending variety of scenarios present themselves day in and day out\u2014such as the time he aided trapped wild deer with an escort off the installation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main goal of a firefighter is to save human beings and animals,\u201d he said. Sometimes that means helping with preventive measures and other times it refers to rescue.<\/p>\n

Laugs started his volunteer firefighting in a small village doing night or 24-hour shifts. After working a full eight-hour shift at the garrison Monday through Friday, he reported for his volunteer position to work some more. The volunteer firefighters lived at the station on the weekends and did everything together: sleeping, cooking, eating, watching TV, sports, and more.<\/p>\n

According to Laugs, regulations changed a few years ago which placed the volunteers in an on-call status at their own homes rather than staying at the station. Now, when the call for help is received, Laugs immediately drops his engagement and responds.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to adjust your life because you are always on call,\u201d said Laugs. \u201cI was always afraid to take a shower or go to the toilet, and with eating you take your first bite then have to go.\u201d Being available at last-minute\u2019s notice means the interruption of present activities.<\/p>\n

Despite the name, volunteer firefighters do get paid for their hours responding to emergencies. Vacancies are opened similar to normal jobs and applicants must apply, interview, and pass a fitness test. Once onboarded, volunteers initially go through two years of education with homework and observations of rescue operations.<\/p>\n

After 17 years serving as a firefighter in various capacities, Laugs possesses extensive experience from both formal education and training as well as response to emergency calls. One of the most memorable activations took place during the 2020 forest fire in the Meinweg National Park when Dutch and German firefighters, including multiple helicopters, responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt went so fast because of the wind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Not all of his job falls in the category of emergency response, though. Occasionally, time is spent working with schools, childcare facilities, and the community to build awareness and demonstrate capabilities within the USAG. In December, crowds of emergency personnel take a trip to the children\u2019s hospital at Maastricht University Medical Center+ in the Netherlands with their blue lights flashing to bring a little cheer to the young inpatients during the holiday season.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor small children, it\u2019s really hard,\u201d said Laugs about the kids that must spend lengthy periods in the hospital, particularly during such a festive time. \u201cThey are really lonely in the hospital, and I think [Blue Lights Night] is really exciting for them. They can get distracted from their illness.\u201d<\/p>\n

BRUNSSUM, Nederland – Op een gemiddelde dag besteedt Roel Laugs, brandpreventie-inspecteur bij U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Benelux-Brunssum, Nederland, zijn tijd aan het handhaven van brandveiligheidsprocedures door middel van inspecties van gebouwen en ruimtes. Zijn regelmatige trainingen, waaronder oefeningen ter bescherming van de installatie, dienen om relaties op te bouwen met hulpverleners buiten de basis en om reactietijden en -inspanningen te testen.<\/p>\n

\u201cElke dag is een andere dag,\u201d zei Laugs, terwijl hij uitlegde hoe een oneindige verscheidenheid aan scenario’s zich dag in dag uit voordoet, zoals de keer dat hij wilde herten hielp die gevangen zaten, en ze met een escorte van de installatie af begeleidde.<\/p>\n

\u201cHet belangrijkste doel van een brandweerman is om mensen en dieren te redden,\u201d zei hij. Soms betekent dat helpen met het nemen van preventieve maatregelen en andere keren gaat het om een reddingsactie.<\/p>\n

Laugs begon zijn vrijwilligerswerk bij de brandweer in een klein dorp met nacht- of 24-uursdiensten. Nadat hij van maandag tot en met vrijdag een volledige dienst van acht uur had gedraaid in het garnizoen, meldde hij zich voor zijn vrijwilligersfunctie om nog wat meer te werken. De vrijwillige brandweermannen woonden in het weekend in de kazerne en deden alles samen: slapen, koken, eten, tv kijken, sporten en nog veel meer.<\/p>\n

Volgens Laugs veranderde de regelgeving een paar jaar geleden, waardoor de vrijwilligers een oproepstatus kregen in hun eigen huis in plaats van op de kazerne. Nu, wanneer de oproep voor hulp binnenkomt, laat Laugs onmiddellijk zijn bezigheden vallen en reageert hij.<\/p>\n

\u201cJe moet je leven aanpassen omdat je altijd oproepbaar bent,\u201d zei Laugs. \u201cIk was altijd bang om te douchen of naar het toilet te gaan, en met eten neem je de eerste hap en dan moet je gaan.\u201d Op het laatste moment beschikbaar zijn betekent de onderbreking van huidige activiteiten.<\/p>\n

Ondanks de naam krijgen vrijwillige brandweermannen wel betaald voor hun uren om op noodsituaties te reageren. Vacatures worden op dezelfde manier opengesteld als normale banen en sollicitanten moeten solliciteren, een gesprek voeren en slagen voor een fitnesstest. Eenmaal aan boord doorlopen vrijwilligers eerst een tweejarige opleiding met huiswerk en observaties van reddingsoperaties.<\/p>\n

Na 17 jaar als brandweerman te hebben gewerkt in verschillende hoedanigheden, heeft Laugs uitgebreide ervaring met zowel formeel onderwijs en training als het reageren op noodoproepen. Een van de meest gedenkwaardige acties vond plaats tijdens de bosbrand van 2020 in het Nationaal Park Meinweg, toen Nederlandse en Duitse brandweerlieden, waaronder meerdere helikopters, in actie kwamen.<\/p>\n

\u201cHet ging zo snel vanwege de wind,\u201d zei hij.<\/p>\n

Niet al zijn werk valt echter in de categorie rampenbestrijding. Zo nu en dan werkt hij samen met scholen, kinderopvangcentra en de gemeenschap om het bewustzijn te vergroten en de capaciteiten van de USAG te demonstreren. In december gaan massa’s hulpverleners met hun blauwe zwaailichten aan naar het kinderziekenhuis van het Maastricht Universitair Medisch Centrum+ in Nederland om de jonge pati\u00ebnten tijdens de feestdagen een beetje op te vrolijken.<\/p>\n

\u201cVoor kleine kinderen is het echt moeilijk,\u201d zei Laugs over de kinderen die lange perioden in het ziekenhuis moeten doorbrengen, vooral tijdens zo’n feestelijke periode. \u201cZe zijn echt eenzaam in het ziekenhuis en ik denk dat [Blue Lights Night] heel spannend voor ze is. Ze kunnen dan afgeleid worden van hun ziekte.\u201d<\/p>\n
