{"id":28874,"date":"2023-09-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=28874"},"modified":"2023-09-26T06:42:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T06:42:24","slug":"air-force-to-field-new-body-armor-carrier-systems-for-aircrew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=28874","title":{"rendered":"Air Force to field new body armor carrier systems for aircrew"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p><strong class=\"article-detail-dateline\">WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) &#8212; \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">U.S. Air Force aircrew operating across 20 different rotor, tilt-wing, and fixed-wing aircraft \u2013 including but not limited to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104531\/cv-22-osprey\/\" target=\"_blank\">CV-22 Ospreys<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104508\/hh-60g-pave-hawk\/\" target=\"_blank\">HH-60G Pave Hawks<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/1555054\/c-130-hercules\/\" target=\"_blank\">C-130 Hercules<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/1529726\/c-17-globemaster-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>C-17 Globemaster III<\/strong>s<\/a> \u2013 will receive new body armor carrier systems as part of an effort to update and replace older models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are replacing approximately 7,300 current legacy body armor carrier systems and components because they are either no longer being sustained by the Defense Logistics Agency or they are impacting mission readiness due to their weight and particular design,\u201d said 1st Lt. Diego Martinez, program manager for Aviation Body Armor within the<strong> <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aflcmc.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force Life Cycle Management Center<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Human Systems Division. \u201cThis effort is crucial because aircrew often operate in hostile environments where they are in real danger, and having the right body armor on the operator or inside the aircraft can be lifesaving.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The body armor carriers are unique and designed specifically for aircrew.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAircrew have very different mission sets compared to other Air Force career fields that may require body armor,\u201d Martinez added. \u201cFor example, aircrew body armor carrier systems need extraction capabilities in the event they [aircrew] need to be extracted for medical reasons.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the benefits of the new carrier systems is that they will weigh less than the legacy systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, weight wasn\u2019t looked at as too much of a big item because people thought that body armor is just heavy inherently,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cBut there have been lots of recent efforts by manufacturers to develop different types of materials or different designs to specifically reduce weight.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, the division has identified two potential replacement systems for aircrew, including the Aviation Body Armor Vest and the Army Aircrew Combat Equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Testing to evaluate operational use and safety of the two systems is scheduled to begin in October 2023 and will conclude by summer of 2024.
