That\u2019s because <a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1200\/OP.20.00577\">66% of rural communities<\/a> do not have access to an oncologist\u2014the medical provider who specializes in caring for cancer and guiding patients\u2019 treatment.<\/p>\n<p>For Marine Corps Veteran Thomas Carlson\u2014who lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota\u2014geography could have been a barrier when he was diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer in 2019. Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.va.gov\/oncology-services-and-tools.html\">National TeleOncology<\/a>, which connects cancer specialists from VA medical centers across the country to Carlson\u2019s local Sioux Falls care team, Carlson received his prostate cancer care without having to spend hours traveling or treatments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey take care of people here and I know I got a good doctor,\u201d Carlson said of his treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVA\u2019s National Oncology Program has expanded telehealth options so the Veteran can be anywhere and the specialists can be anywhere else so the two can come together to get seamless care within the system where all providers can have access to the patient,\u201d explained Dr. Carolyn Menendez, director of VA\u2019s Comprehensive Genetics Service (CGS), in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Skp9PBq4OsE\">video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other ways VA is expanding access to cancer care<\/h2>\n<p>VA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9zd70VezpIc?si=r5udcebkKmG73wHu\">Clinical Cancer Genetics Service<\/a> provides Veterans with cancer genetic counseling that is readily accessible regardless of where they live, including cancer risk assessment, hereditary germline genetic counseling and testing for Veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Under VA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-expands-close-to-me-cancer-program\/\">Close to Me cancer care service<\/a>, care teams travel to provide Veterans with the full continuum of cancer care at local outpatient clinics like community-based outpatient clinics or other VA facilities often in rural locations. Close to Me ensures more Veterans have the option to choose VA for their cancer care journey.
