Hannah Tarkelly)<\/span><br \/>\n              <\/span><br \/>\n              <a href=\"https:\/\/api.army.mil\/e2\/c\/images\/2024\/10\/16\/5653c488\/original.jpg\" title=\"View original\" target=\"_blank\">VIEW ORIGINAL<\/a><br \/>\n            <\/span><br \/>\n          <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>NEBO, N.C. &#8211; \u201cThe troops are here!\u201d said Western North Carolina resident Rick Brite, who watched as a group of North Carolina National Guardsmen approached his property with reinforcements and heavy machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Like many of their neighbors, Rick and Carla Brite woke up to discover the devastating aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.<\/p>\n<p>What was once a luscious yard filled with butterfly bushes, flowers and a small creek turned into what Carla described as \u201cthe Mississippi River.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raging waters surged down the mountainous terrain, carrying trees, rocks and even tires through Rick and Carla\u2019s front yard.<\/p>\n<p>As the waters died down, it was clear that their driveway connecting to the outside world had washed away, leaving a rock-filled creek in its wake.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the newly created obstacle, Rick expressed concern about how they would obtain supplies or receive aid due to their health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Carla described the situation as \u201coverwhelming and heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the morning of Oct. 9, a group of Tarheel Soldiers with the 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 875th Engineer Company, 883rd Engineer Company and the 875th Engineer Construction Company arrived with tools and a High Mobility Engineer Excavator ready to fix what Tropical Storm Helene destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, it\u2019s personal,\u201d said 1st Lt. Hunter Maynor, assigned to the 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion. \u201cThese are our people, our friends and our neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the roads cleared, Maynor described how the State Bureau of Investigation and North Carolina Guardsmen traveled door to door to assess the needs of residents in the rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful thing,\u201d Rick said. \u201cI\u2019m just thankful y\u2019all showed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tarheel team quickly got to work and within a couple of hours, Rick and Carla had a new bridge that crossed over the creek and connected them to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re locals here,\u201d Maynor said. \u201cSo, this is us giving back to the community where we\u2019ve grown up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a new bridge and lifted spirits, Carla said the first thing she planned to do was visit her mother, who lived nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Maynor said that the bridge built for the Brites was one of many, and the Guard worked tirelessly to assist more residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake way when you see the National Guard coming through,\u201d said Rick. \u201cBecause they\u2019re going to help someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">For more National Guard news<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheNationalGuard\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Guard Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usnationalguard\" target=\"_blank\">National Guard X<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1 \/ 2 Show Caption + Hide Caption \u2013 North Carolina National Guardsmen with the 113th Sustainment Brigade and the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team pose for a photo with Rick and Carla Brite after a bridge-building operation at their residence in Nebo, N.C., Oct. 9, 2024.
