[Editor\u2019s Note: In this series, we are shining a light on our workforce in and around the Benelux. This Spotlight <\/em>is on Patrick Fowler, site manager of Army Community Service (ACS) at USAG Benelux-Brunssum, who spends his free time volunteering to honor veterans and help military service members and their families.]<\/p>\n

BRUNSSUM, Netherlands \u2013 In his day job, Patrick Fowler, site manager of Army Community Service at USAG Benelux-Brunssum, takes care of Soldiers and veterans in the community. In his free time, he continues similar efforts in a personal capacity by volunteering for the American Legion, Post NL 01.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like helping veterans and being out in the veteran community,\u201d said Fowler. \u201cThe veteran population here is very integrated into doing a lot of the commemorations from World War I and World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fowler has attended numerous events participating in the color guard with American Legion. This year, he was invited for the first time to the Wereth 11 commemoration in Belgium.<\/p>\n

The commemoration remembers 11 Black U.S. Soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion who were tortured and executed by German SS officers in December 1944. Fleeing pursuit of Nazi troops from the Battle of the Bulge, these Soldiers had sought refuge in a home in Wereth, but the German patrol discovered their hiding place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was asked as an African American and a [U.S. Army] retiree to lay the wreath there,\u201d said Fowler. \u201cI was very honored.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fowler’s parents had no history of military service, but as he and his siblings grew to adulthood, many of their paths drew them to serve. He was the youngest of 11 children and six, including him, joined and retired after full careers\u2014three in the Air Force, two in the Army, and one in the Navy. Upon Fowler\u2019s retirement, as the youngest child and last to retire, he presented his mother with his certificate and flag counting 150 years of combined military service from all her children. Fowler\u2019s son chose to continue the legacy to the next generation when he joined the U.S. Air Force.<\/p>\n

After Fowler\u2019s full Army career in healthcare management, he went back to school to get a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling with a concentration in Military Resiliency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking in hospitals you see a lot of people coming in that need services, and I\u2019ve always had this kind of helping-type of nature,\u201d said Fowler. His continued education opened doors to many other work opportunities including his current position with ACS.<\/p>\n

When Fowler is not at work or helping with American Legion, he can be found volunteering beside his wife with the Parent Teacher Association at AFNorth International School. While their youngest daughter participates in sports, they volunteer in the concession stand and generally help wherever needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to give back to the community and work with the military and their Families,\u201d he said. \u201c[When] doing stuff you like, you never go to work a day in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

USAG Benelux Spotlight: Patrick Fowler<\/h2>\n

BRUNSSUM, Nederland \u2013 In zijn dagelijkse werk zorgt Patrick Fowler, site manager van Army Community Service (ACS) bij USAG Benelux-Brunssum, voor soldaten en veteranen in de gemeenschap. In zijn vrije tijd zet hij soortgelijke inspanningen op persoonlijk gebied voort door vrijwilligerswerk te doen voor het American Legion, Post NL 01.<\/p>\n

“Ik vind het leuk om veteranen te helpen en in de veteranengemeenschap te zijn,” zei Fowler. “De veteranenbevolking hier is erg ge\u00efntegreerd in de herdenkingen van de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog.”<\/p>\n

Fowler heeft veel evenementen bijgewoond waarbij hij deel uitmaakte van de Color Guard van het American Legion. Dit jaar werd hij voor het eerst uitgenodigd voor de Wereth 11 herdenking in Belgi\u00eb.<\/p>\n

De herdenking herdenkt 11 Afro-Amerikaanse soldaten van het 333rd Field Artillery Battalion die in december 1944 werden gemarteld en ge\u00ebxecuteerd door Duitse SS-officieren. Op de vlucht voor nazi-troepen tijdens het Ardennenoffensief zochten deze soldaten hun toevlucht in een huis in Wereth, maar de Duitse patrouille ontdekte hun schuilplaats.<\/p>\n

“Ik werd als Afro-Amerikaan en gepensioneerde [van het Amerikaanse leger] gevraagd om daar de krans te leggen,” zei Fowler. “Ik was zeer vereerd.”<\/p>\n

De ouders van Fowler hadden geen militaire dienstverleden, maar toen hij en zijn broers en zussen volwassen werden, leidden veel van hun wegen naar het leger. Hij was de jongste van 11 kinderen en zes van hen, waaronder hijzelf, gingen in dienst en met pensioen na een volledige carri\u00e8re: drie bij de luchtmacht, twee bij het leger en \u00e9\u00e9n bij de marine. Toen Fowler met pensioen ging, overhandigde hij zijn certificaat en vlag aan zijn moeder als het jongste en laatste kind dat deed uittreden van de militaire dienst waarbij haar kinderen gecombineerd een militaire dienst van 150 jaar voltooiden. De zoon van Fowler koos ervoor om de nalatenschap voort te zetten voor de volgende generatie toen hij bij de Amerikaanse luchtmacht ging.<\/p>\n

Na zijn volledige carri\u00e8re in het leger in gezondheidszorgmanagement ging Fowler terug naar school om een Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling te halen met een specialisatie in Militaire veerkracht.<\/p>\n

“Als je in ziekenhuizen werkt, zie je veel mensen binnenkomen die hulp nodig hebben en ik heb altijd een soort helpende aard gehad,” zei Fowler. Zijn vervolgopleiding opende deuren naar vele andere werkmogelijkheden, waaronder zijn huidige functie bij ACS.<\/p>\n

Als Fowler niet aan het werk is of bij het American Legion helpt, is hij samen met zijn vrouw als vrijwilliger te vinden bij de Parent Teacher Association op AFNorth International School. Terwijl hun jongste dochter aan het sporten is, doen zij vrijwilligerswerk in de kraam en helpen ze daar waar nodig.<\/p>\n
