On January 18, 2025, we celebrate 105 years of free Toruń.

The main city celebrations of Toruń’s return to free Poland took place in the Old Town Square. The Commander of the Toruń Garrison accepted the report, the Toruń residents sang the Polish National Anthem together and the flag was raised on the mast. The significance of this important event, not only for our city, was recalled by, among others, the Mayor of Toruń Paweł Gulewski.

– It was here, on the Old Town Square, that 105 years ago, the historic act of Toruń’s return to the reborn, most serene Republic of Poland took place. After 127 years of captivity, our city once again became part of a free and sovereign Poland, the capital of Pomerania. This time, the dreams of six generations of daughters and sons of the Pomeranian land, the aspirations of patriots and the desires of social activists, citizens of our famous city, came true. This act was the final work of building a new international order, a new shape for this part of Europe, confirmed by the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles in June 1919. Three days later, on January 21, 1920, from the balcony of the Old Town Hall, the Pomeranian Voivode Stefan Łaszewski, the First Commissioner, Mayor of Toruń Otto Steinborn and General Józef Haller announced the fall of the invasive Prussian government. The commander of the Blue Army said at the time: “Here was, is and will be only Poland!” – said the Mayor of Toruń, Paweł Gulewski. – Today, together with the soldiers of the Toruń garrison, we are standing in the exact same part of the Old Town Square, where the first, historic briefing and parade of the Polish Army took place in January 1920. It was in the heart of Toruń that the Haller Trail began, which led the Polish army through Grudziądz and the whole of Pomerania to Puck on the Baltic Sea, where Poland’s wedding to the sea took place.

Among the celebrating were, among others, Member of the Polish Parliament and Deputy Minister of Justice Arkadiusz Myrcha, representatives of the governor, authorities of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Chairman of the Toruń City Council Łukasz Walkusz and Toruń councillors. The gathered also listened to the representative song of the Polish Army and a medley of patriotic songs. The ceremony was concluded with the leading of the banner of the military honor guard and the arriving standard guards and accompanying units.

After the ceremonies at the Old Town Market Square in the Municipal Hall of the Old Town Hall, a popular science “Forenoon with Independence” took place, during which patriotic songs were sung together. There was also no shortage of sweet treats. On the other hand, the Haller holidays were brought to the gathered people by prof. Jarosław Kłaczkow in his lecture “The Return of Toruń to Free Poland”.

Let us recall that the celebrations of the 105th anniversary of Toruń’s return to free Poland began on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in the Great Hall of the Artus Court with the concert “Harmonia nowe początków” performed by the Military Orchestra in Toruń under the baton of Capt. Joanna Krause and Junior Warrant Officer Kamil Lewandowski. The orchestra was joined by soloists Aga Twardowska and Mateusz Wiśniewski.

In turn, on Friday, January 17, 2025, a delegation of the city government headed by the Mayor of Toruń Paweł Gulewski and the Chairman of the Toruń City Council Łukasz Walkusz, laid flowers at the monuments of people who made outstanding contributions to regaining independence: the Commissioner Mayor of Toruń Otto Steinborn at the St. George Cemetery, the Pomeranian Voivode Stefan Łaszewski at the Collegium Maius and General Józef Haller.

33rd Finale of Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity in Toruń 2025

Concerts, shows, a big hug and a light to heaven – these are the permanent elements of the program of the next finales of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) in Toruń. The closest one is this Sunday – the orchestra will play for children with oncological diseases.

Toruń’s involvement in the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has been going on for decades. Almost every year, new collection records are broken in the city, and nothing untoward disturbs the loud and colorful fun during the finals. And it will probably be the same on Sunday, January 26, when the orchestra will begin its thirty-third performance in the city, but also in the country and around the world.

Orchestra towns in the old town

There are four WOŚP headquarters in Toruń – the main one run by scouts from the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association and in the 3rd High School on Skarpa, in Primary School No. 1 in the old town and the youngest of them – in the “Młody Las” care facility on Bydgoskie Przedmieście. However, it is the main headquarters that is responsible for organizing the most important events in Toruń. And there will certainly be no shortage of attractions.

– We will have two WOŚP centres in the old town. Concerts, auctions, shows and squeezes will be held in the Old Town Market. The New Town Market will be something like a medical town, where you will be able to get tested and get valuable advice – explains Artur Majerowski, head of the main staff of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity in Toruń.

A march on stilts with an orchestra

The first attractions in the Old Town Market Square are planned for around 11 a.m. Preschoolers and other young artists will perform on stage. The first auctions will also take place then. At 1:30 p.m. a procession led by stilt walkers with a military orchestra will set off from the New Town Market Square. It will reach the Old Town Market Square, where the squeeze will start at 2 p.m. Then a rescue show is planned there – extricating victims from a car that has been involved in an accident. Then there will be concerts and auctions. Among other things, golden hearts and golden cards will go under the hammer, as well as gingerbread workshops with Minister Radosław Sikorski and the President of Toruń Paweł Gulewski. At 8 p.m. a traditional, laser light to the sky is planned.

Research, rides and excursion

Throughout the day, the WOŚP medical town will be open at the New Town Square. People who want to donate blood and get tested will be able to use the available stations. What’s more, this year women will be able to visit a mobile gynecologist.
WOŚP will also play in Motopark from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be attractions related to cars, fast driving, etc.
As part of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, guide Adam Marszelewski invites you to an extended tour of Fort IV at ul. Chrobrego 86. The meeting is on Saturday, January 25 at 12 p.m. Tour participants are asked to bring flashlights and good footwear. Instead of tickets, there will be a WOŚP money box. Registration is required for the tour. You can reserve a place in the group by calling 56 655 82 36 or writing to: biuro@fort.torun.pl .

Tram through the city

The Municipal Transport Company has once again joined the game with WOŚP. At the bus depots, you can throw money into the collection boxes, but the real treat will be a ride on a historic tourist tram, which will be put up for auction.

– The auction is for an approx. 45-minute ride along Bydgoskie Przedmieście with a guide. The tram can hold approx. 25 people, so we recommend the auction especially to large families, groups or companies – give your loved ones, friends or co-workers a special time.

Polish Amateur Cross-Country Skiing Championships – close to Boleslawiec

The competition is open to everyone.
