Just come out, have fun and move your body. Even if you don’t feel like working out when you arrive, you’ll leave feeling lighter. It’s something to look forward to every week, especially with the weather being the way it is.”

Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate but do not need prior experience. All fitness levels are welcome. The Red Cross also provides snacks, drinks, and giveaways after each class.

“I think that so far, this program has been a success,” said Paul Smith, regional manager for the American Red Cross in Bavaria. “We have many regular students that come here every week. Participants can expect a diversity of classes, different opportunities to have fun and get a great workout.”

The program, which began in early 2024, is a collaboration between the American Red Cross, the Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP), the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and dedicated volunteers. According to Smith the initiative was created to improve health, friendships, and share resources.

For Pilates instructor Kathrin Chamberlain the Wellness Wednesdays have become more than just an exercise class.

“It’s bigger than just yourself,” she said. “You’re doing it for others, and it gives people a sense of community within a community. I think especially in Germany a lot of people can feel isolated, so it gives them a sense of belonging and support. It definitely helped me build my confidence and I hope I can help others build their confidence too by doing this.”

Local national employees, like Denise Frenzel, administrative support specialist for USAG Bavaria, appreciate the opportunity the program provides during work hours.

“It’s wonderful that our employer allows us to use the gym and attend these classes,” said Frenzel. “It’s not only great for personal fitness, but also for relieving daily stress and changing your environment.”

The program is offered during lunchtime from noon to 1 p.m. as a part of the Civilian Fitness Program.

Smith has heard lots of positive feedback from participants. Some say that the program makes them feel better, improves their day and helps them make new connections.

“I encourage everyone to try something new and commit to their health,” said Smith. “It would be fantastic for them and for the community as a whole.”

For more information on upcoming classes click here.

TOWER BARRACKS, Germany — The USAG Bavaria Tower Barracks Fitness Center hosts Wellness Wednesdays, a free fitness program open to Department of Defense employees, Family members, and local national employees with post access.
