Co-presented by VA and Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Wheelchair Games brought together 537 Veteran athletes from across the country to compete in over 20 adaptive sports events, including basketball, softball, rugby, cycling, archery, disc golf, pickleball, 9-ball, boccia, powerlifting and swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch in 1981, the Wheelchair Games have grown from a small event with 77 athletes and 7 competitions into the world\u2019s largest annual wheelchair sports and rehabilitation event solely for Veterans with disabilities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/veteransaffairs\/54662042191\/in\/album-72177720327527261\/\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Wheelchair Games are open to Veterans with spinal cord injuries, amputations, multiple sclerosis or other central neurological conditions who require a wheelchair for athletic competition. Each year, Veterans from different generations\u2014from World War II to post-9\/11 service members\u2014come together for this celebration of sport, courage and camaraderie.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Wheelchair Games is about more than medals. The event promotes whole health, rehabilitation and recovery through adaptive sports, helping Veterans rediscover purpose, gain confidence and build lifelong connections.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/veteransaffairs\/54665778311\/in\/album-72177720327527261\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/54665778311_96e705d1a4_b.jpg\" alt=\"NVWG 2025 071925_AV-424\" width=\"1024\" height=\"657\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>For Navy Veteran Breanna Wharram (above), attending her first Wheelchair Games was life changing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought I\u2019d be able to play sports that required this kind of movement again,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I came to the Wheelchair Games, and I was like, oh my God, this is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/veteransaffairs\/54662713682\/in\/album-72177720327527261\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/54662713682_e4f3163f28_b.jpg\" alt=\"NVWG 2025 071825_AV-37\" width=\"1024\" height=\"757\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That sense of discovery is what drives Veterans like Marine Corps Veteran Julie Casai (above) to stay involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my first time competing, I committed to going to every National Veterans Wheelchair Games for the rest of my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/veteransaffairs\/54665548808\/in\/album-72177720327527261\/ \u00a0\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>For Army Veteran Linda Hooker (bowling, above), who competed in adaptive fitness, slalom, bowling, boccia and frisbee golf, the spirit of the Wheelchair Games is unlike anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the camaraderie and spirit of the Wheelchair Games. There\u2019s nothing like it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to have the Wheelchair Games here in my backyard. This year marked his 18th Wheelchair Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe excitement leading up to the Wheelchair Games gets me smiling every time,\u201d Wilkins said. \u201cWhen I reconnect with my brothers here, it\u2019s like I never left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final days included memorable moments like a 700-pound deadlift in powerlifting by Army Veteran Anthony Martinez, inspiring finishes in swimming and the motor rally at the Mill City Museum, where Veterans tested their knowledge of Minneapolis landmarks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/veteransaffairs\/54670759569\/in\/dateposted-public\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/54670759569_ea3f15f39a_b.jpg\" alt=\"NVWG 2025 072125057_RL\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Wheelchair Games concluded with a Closing Ceremony, where the torch for the 2026 National Veterans Wheelchair Games was officially passed to the Detroit VA Medical Health Care System.
