{"id":553241,"date":"2025-07-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=553241"},"modified":"2025-07-25T17:23:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T17:23:59","slug":"cloudy-with-a-chance-of-aircraft-36th-oss-forecasts-the-force-during-reforpac-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adn.monetizemail.com\/?p=553241","title":{"rendered":"Cloudy with a chance of aircraft: 36th OSS forecasts the force during REFORPAC 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/Jul\/25\/2003761361\/2000\/2000\/0\/250725-F-CX880-1006.JPG\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong class=\"article-detail-dateline\">ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam (AFNS) &#8212; \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>The 36th Operations Support Squadron provides daily forecasts during real-world operations and exercise <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacaf.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4209076\/reforpac-2025-high-powered-international-team-ready-to-conduct-air-forces-large\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Resolute Force Pacific 2025<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span><strong> <\/strong>July 10<\/span>-Aug. 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>As part of the first-in-a-generation <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4236472\/daf-kicks-off-department-level-exercise-series-in-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Department-Level Exercise<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span><strong> <\/strong>series, REFORPAC is designed to train Airmen to conduct operations in a contested, dynamic environment to build capabilities for a stronger, more lethal deterrent force.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>\u201cOn a day to day, we look at what is going on with the weather and produce a forecast for the base, so missions can be planned around what we are forecasting the weather to be,\u201d said Airman 1st Class Ken Schwartz, a 36th OSS weather apprentice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>The 15-member Weather Flight here works around the clock to stay up to date on the latest atmospheric conditions for Guam.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>When a forecast is produced, weather personnel look at data provided by Mark IV-B, a weather system designed to support tactical operations. The satellite shows images of clouds and other natural ingredients that potentially produce unfavorable conditions for flying.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>For example, forecasters may see a dark, tall cloud and predict lightning, or they may see icing and certain levels of wind turbulence that could be detrimental to operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>\u201cRight now, our forecasts include a tropical cyclone,\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cThat\u2019s very important because it\u2019s going to cause impacts for Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>After drafting the forecast, <\/span>Schwartz and his team routes it through the 36th Air Expeditionary Task Force to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacaf.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Pacific Air Forces<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span> leadership. Due to inclement weather, participating REFORPAC <\/span>aircraft are being recalled to ensure personnel safety and prevent damage to assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>\u201cWeather is important because without us, pilots won\u2019t know what they are flying into,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the pilots don\u2019t get where they\u2019re supposed to be going, the Air Force doesn\u2019t get the mission done.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>From <\/span>aircraft performance to mission timing, precise weather forecasting is essential to Air Force operations. Understanding the skies is critical to owning them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span>\u201cWeather never stops,\u201d said Airman 1st Class Nicholas Clark, a 36th OSS weather apprentice and forecaster. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s important for us to be here 24\/7 so pilots who are flying can get information about conditions that can be hazardous to aircraft.
