(AFNS)  &#8212; \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The<strong> <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dover.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/228970\/436th-airlift-wing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>436th Airlift Wing<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span>, based out of Dover A<\/span>ir Force Base, Delaware, and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eglin.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/390959\/96th-test-wing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>96th Test Wing<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span><strong> <\/strong>from Eglin <\/span>AFB conducted unique training exercise recently where a 436th AW<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104492\/c-5m-super-galaxy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>C-5M Super Galaxy<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span> flew <\/span>to Eglin so base units could process and load their support vehicles onto the largest aircraft in the Air Force\u2019s inventory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span>The vehicles, including the base\u2019s new P-23 firetruck, a<strong> <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/asc.army.mil\/web\/portfolio-item\/cs-css-high-mobility-multipurpose-wheeled-vehicle-hmmwv\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Humvee<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span>, a front-end loader, an ambulance and more, were weighed and measured by Eglin\u2019s 96th Logistics Readiness Squadron aerial porters<\/span> and then positioned and readied for load and mock transfer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Once the aircraft arrived and opened for loading, the vehicles and their drivers lined up for their turn to drive <\/span>onto the C-5 through its gaping maw.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The C-5 can be loaded from the front or back of the aircraft<\/span> and can have a cargo load of 281,000 pounds, can fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination \u2014 all without aerial refueling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a rare opportunity for Eglin Airmen to practice generating load plans and securing vehicles on the aircraft,\u201d said Tech. Sgt. John Gordon, 96th LRS air operations NCO-in-charge, who helped coordinate the Eglin portion of the training operation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>It was also a chance for firefighters, medics, fuels and the aerial porters to drive their primary vehicles onto an aircraft, many of them for the first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was my first time loading a vehicle on to an aircraft, let alone the biggest aircraft, so there were some nerves, but good nerves,\u201d said Airman Philip Nazario, a new 96th LRS <\/span>aerial porter. \u201cI just focused on the spotter, did one thing at a time and tried not make mistakes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-split ntext breakout  no-pad-top no-pad-bottom\">\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"body\">\n            \u200b<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The C-5M Super Galaxy is a strategic transport aircraft and is the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>When loading began, the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afhra.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/433917\/9-airlift-squadron\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>9th Airlift Squadron<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span>\u2019s loadmasters took charge. They validated the order and location of the vehicles and marshalled them up and inside the aircraft.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cThe C-5 is designed for out-sized <\/span>cargo and we aren&#8217;t always utilized in this way, so to be able to train to and for that was a big win for us,\u201d said Master Sgt. Monty West, 9th AS C-5M evaluator loadmaster. \u201cHeavier weights and axels, like on the firetruck, was a great teaching opportunity for aircraft limitations since you can&#8217;t just park it anywhere.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>For the 9th AS\u2019s loadmaster, Airman Wyatt Nagelkirk, this cargo load was his first.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cThe goal was to show him the basics of a cargo load and sequence of events that take place from the Dover take off, cargo upload\/download and move on,\u201d West<\/span> said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Although Nagelkirk was there to shadow and observe, he led the marshalling and parking of the ambulance into the C-5.\u00a0 It was a glimpse of what he will oversee during his career, according to West.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>When the opportunity for this training mission began, the Air Force invited the Army\u2019s <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soc.mil\/USASFC\/Groups\/7th\/7thSFGHomepage.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>7th Special Forces Group<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span> to participate. Soldiers brought two light tactical vehicles <\/span>similar to Humvees and trained in the loading and vehicle-tie-down process with the Airmen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>When each new vehicle was parked, loadmasters, <\/span>aerial porters and Soldiers all pitched in to chain down and secure them to the floor of the C-5. Each different military specialty took turns to listen, learn and participate in the hands-on training.\u00a0 The aerial porters also completed some chemical-biological training with two Airmen securing a vehicle while dressed in<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dchealth.dc.gov\/service\/cbrne-chemical-biological-radiological-nuclear-and-explosives#:~:text=CBRNE%20is%20an%20acronym%20for,mitigate%20attacks%20from%20such%20weapons.\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span>, or <\/span>CBRNE, protective gear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>More than 30 Airmen and Soldiers loaded, secured and <\/span>then unloaded six vehicles weighing more than 150,000 pounds in just a few hours, helping to further the Air Force\u2019s commitment to training Multi-Capable Airman who are faster, smarter and ready for the future fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla.
