VICENZA, Italy – U.S. Army Garrison Italy welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Ricardo Moreno as the garrison’s senior enlisted leader during a Feb. 6 assumption of responsibility ceremony on Caserma Ederle.

Several senior leaders attended the event at the Golden Lion conference center, to include Maj. Gen. Todd Wasmund, commander of Southern European Task Force, Africa and his senior enlisted advisor, Command Sgt. Maj. Reese Teakell. The host of the ceremony was Tommy Mize, director of Installation Management Command, Europe, who attended with his senior enlisted advisor, Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Truchon.

As part of the traditional ceremony, Col. Scott Horrigan, USAG Italy’s commander, passed the unit colors to Moreno, who’s wife and son were watching via livestream from South Carolina.

During his remarks, Horrigan spoke of uncertainty a leader has when taking a garrison position. He stressed that Moreno was chosen by his ability to lead and how pivotal that is for a garrison.

“The infrastructure that Installation Management Command delivers is why the Army has a home in Italy, the services are why it feels like a home, and the people who work in the garrison are why we are a community,” said Horrigan said.

Prior to assuming responsibility Moreno visited garrison directorates with the help of Command Sgt. Maj. Jonathan Dyon, the former senior enlisted leader who went on to serve in Egypt.

Moreno, a Puerto Rico-native who has served in the infantry since joining the Army in 1995, thanked his family for all their support, and looks forward to them joining him in Vicenza soon. Moreno expressed gratitude to those that helped him achieve this milestone.

“Thank you for your trust and confidence in me to lead this fine garrison,” Moreno said. “I’m looking forward to working with you and these two years are going to be amazing.”
