SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaiʻi—The U.S. Army Hawaiʻi recently held a heartwarming ceremony at the Schofield Barracks 604 Ballroom to honor and recognize the exceptional efforts of their volunteers. The ceremony united 22 military installations to formally thank and appreciate their volunteers.
Ninety-two volunteers received the prestigious Nā Koa Award for Service, established by the Hawaii Installation Volunteer Advisory Council. This award, whose name means “The Warrior,” recognizes volunteers who go above and beyond in their service, reflecting the installation’s Hawaiian heritage.
Col. Steven McGunegle, Command Sgt. Maj. Derek Wise, and Mrs. Lori King represented the U.S. Army Hawaiʻi community and presented the annual check, symbolizing the Department of Defense’s commitment to supporting its volunteers. These volunteers contributed an impressive 52,319 hours in 2023, equivalent to $1,663,744.
Volunteers of the Year were recognized in several categories, highlighting their diverse contributions:
– Major Command, Tenant Organizational Volunteers of the Year: Mr. Ray Galas and Army Spc. Letcia Casati.
– Soldier Volunteer of the Year: Army Maj. Efrain Jimenez.
– Civilian Volunteer of the Year: Ms. Janet Roman.
– Spouse Volunteer of the Year: Mrs. Caisey Thornton.
– Retiree Volunteer of the Year: Col. David Lopez.
– Family Volunteers of the Year: Army Spcs. Garrett and Mrs. Avery Ve Zain.
– Youth Volunteer of the Year: Ms. Amaya Goe Ins.
The U.S. Army Hawaiʻi community is deeply grateful for the selfless service of these volunteers, whose contributions have significantly impacted many lives. Their dedication is a testament to the power of volunteerism in building and strengthening our community.
