ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) —
The Air Force is continuing to improve its talent management programs to provide additional opportunities to further develop and retain Airmen.
The latest program to evolve is the retraining process for Career Airmen, or those on their second or subsequential enlistments, which updates eligibility requirements for FY24.
During Phase I, which began Aug. 1, the window to apply was significantly increased to nine months, allowing more time for decision and package preparation. This window focuses on soliciting volunteers from identified overage Air Force Specialty Codes to fill requirements in career fields with known shortages.
“We are continuing to advance our talent management programs, allowing more flexibility and opportunities to keep Airmen in our ranks,” said Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services Lt. Gen. Caroline Miller. “This is key to keeping great talent we need and for the future force against potential challenges.”
If applications are still needed for Phase I, all eligible Airmen who are vulnerable for involuntary retraining will be formally notified in early February 2024 and are encouraged to apply for shortage AFSCs prior to implementation of Phase II, which is scheduled to run from May 1, 2024, through July 31, 2024.
Additionally, Phase II provides Career Airmen the opportunity to retrain into any AFSC manned below 90% in lieu of separation.
Earlier this year, the Air Force announced changes to the First Term Airmen retraining process, and these changes now bring the same opportunities for Career Airmen.
