Job fair at Audie Murphy VA draws over 500 applicants

Secretary Denis McDonough says VA’s workforce is our number one asset and has made it clear that investing in VA employees is a top strategic priority. Aggressive hiring and retention efforts have helped lead VA to the point where we are currently providing more care and more benefits to more Veterans than at any time in our nation’s history.

In keeping with VA’s priorities, South Texas VA held a job fair at the Audie L. Murphy campus in August.

Potential candidates arrived looking to join the VA team and fill positions in nursing, police, administration and many others. There was a sense of optimism in the halls and various onboarding stations. Resumes were reviewed, interviews conducted and selected candidates had fingerprinting completed.

Executive director Dr. Julianne Flynn was assisting as a runner, taking candidates to different stations. “The turnout is the biggest I’ve ever seen. People are excited about the potential to get a position here,” Flyn said.

Army Veteran Simone Simmons said she woke up that morning and said, “I’m getting a job today.” And that she did as she was selected for a licensed vocational nurse position in the Community Living Center. She was one of 106 applicants selected for a position.

Associate Medical Center Director for Resources Shane Soto said, “It’s a great opportunity to fill our critical shortages in job series we know are foundational to providing the support needed for our Veterans and for our team members.”

As one of the fastest growing VA spaces in the nation, South Texas had one of the biggest and largest job fair turnouts with over 500 attendees.
