Teenager’s rabbit auction benefits Veterans

This is the story of a teenager, his rabbits and a very generous donation for Veterans.

Mason Michaelson has always been a compassionate and determined young man. At the age of five, he joined the local 4-H club of Ontario County. Michaelson, now 14, has shown rabbits, poultry, goats and pigs over the years at the Ontario County Fair.  Three years ago, the fair re-introduced its livestock auction. He was excited about this new adventure and began with a swine project.

Michaelson has been a member of the Hens & Hares 4-H club for many years, with an interest in learning more about market rabbits. After participating in the livestock auctions, he felt he could use this opportunity to start a new project while giving back to the community.

Grandfather suggested Veterans

Michaelson wanted to pick an organization that was local and would directly impact members of his community. His grandfather, a World War II Veteran, helped him decide to give back to Veterans.

He chose to dedicate his time and resources on market rabbits. He learned about caring for and breeding rabbits.

On the day of the auction, Michaelson informed the community that he was using this profit to raise money for Veterans. Community members were ready to support his efforts.

By the end of the auction, he had raised $4,500 and donated the full amount to Finger Lakes VA, ensuring all proceeds would directly impact local Veterans.

Michaelson is an inspiration to the 4-H community and beyond. What had started as a small idea had grown into something much bigger, showing how one young person’s dedication and compassion could make a real impact. And for Michaelson, it’s just the beginning of his journey.
