SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – (January 10, 2025) The Canby Community Center at Island Palm Communities (IPC) celebrated its grand opening this week with a traditional Hawaiian blessing led by Kahu Kekoa Cordell. The ceremony brought together military leadership, IPC’s Resident Advisory Board, and the IPC team, led by Project Director Iris Kirk.
“This moment has been years in the making and an exciting new chapter for the Canby Community,” said Kirk. “More than just a ‘house,’ our community is a ‘home’ filled with families and friends. This center will welcome residents to gather, connect, and create memories that will last a lifetime.”
Col. Rachel Sullivan, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, commander, reflected on the site’s rich history, which once served as the Engineers Officers Club and Beer Garden.
“Standing here today reminds us of the legacy and traditions shared for over a century here in the Canby community,” Sullivan said. “Now, we begin a new chapter for our military families, where they can create new memories and traditions.”
Blending tradition with modern design, the new center honors the Canby community’s rich history, which dates back to 1919, while fostering community and connection.
Ka’eo Winner, IPC director of property management, added, “We are thrilled to see how this space will become a vibrant hub for residents, continuing the spirit of Aloha.”
The event concluded with a celebratory lunch and a kindness rock-painting activity for the new Canby Rock Garden, symbolizing the spirit of unity and collaboration. The Canby Community Center now stands as a tribute to its storied past and a space for creating cherished traditions for military members and their families.
