PISA, Italy – On March 28, the Humanitarian Assistance Program-Livorno (HAP-Livorno) sent aid supplies to support Ukrainian refugees in Latvia. The organization was tasked with the effort by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

“The Excess Property provided by HAP-Livorno supports the Country Cooperation Plan’s Line of Activity to strengthen Latvia’s capacity and capability to provide essential public services,” said HAP-Livorno Program Manager Janine Wick. “This is an Integrated Country Strategy goal to deepen trans-Atlantic values. This aid package increases DOD’s visibility and demonstrates the United States’ continued commitment and support to Latvia.”

The shipment included 2,400 folding cots, pillows and blankets, worth more than $200,000. It was transported to Riga, Latvia by roadway via six commercial trucks, arriving on March 31, 2023. Upon arrival, the shipment was processed by customs, then transferred by the U.S. Embassy Latvia to Riga State Fire and Rescue Services (SFRS), who will put the supplies to immediate use supporting the area’s refugee population. “The items requested were chosen because they are easily transportable, durable, don’t require mattresses, and can be quickly set up for emergency shelters or temporary accommodations,” said Wick.

According to Wick, Latvia currently hosts the fifth-highest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita. “By the end of November 2022, 35,000 Ukrainians were receiving public assistance in Latvia, and more than 210,000 Ukrainians have already entered the country,” said Wick.
