BOSS Program Spearheads Adopt-A-Highway Initiative

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawai’i – Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, the U.S. Army Garrison Hawai’i Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program has been proactive in their Adopt-A-Highway efforts. The BOSS program officially adopted a portion of Farrington Highway, spanning from the Kaena Point State Park Boundary to Kaukonahua Road at Thompson Corner (Route 930), on September 7, 2023. A sign marking this adoption was erected on November 4, 2023. This two-year agreement involves a dedication to maintain the highway cleanliness with a commitment of four cleanups annually.

The program recently conducted its third Adopt-A-Highway cleanup event of the year on Farrington Highway, overcoming challenging weather conditions. Pfc. Adam Gaytan and Spc. Bailey Hudson of the 125th Finance Battalion Bravo Company participated in the event. Their dedication was evident as they worked diligently, highlighting the significance of individual efforts in environmental preservation. “Just cleaning up one tiny area makes a difference,” remarked Gaytan, while Hudson expressed a newfound appreciation for the community and environment.

Staff Sgt. Mai Phan, president of USAG Hawaii BOSS, and Sgt. Donald Cabrera, a key organizer of the BOSS events, were instrumental in this initiative. The day’s activities involved cleaning a two-mile stretch of Farrington Highway on the North Shore, with participation from 10 Soldiers across various units. This initiative underscored the Army’s commitment to community service and environmental awareness.

The BOSS program, which welcomes all single or unaccompanied Soldiers, civilians, and their families, is centered around community involvement. Phan emphasized the program’s inclusive nature and its role in providing Soldiers opportunities to earn volunteer hours, aiding in their professional development within the Army.

This event, marking their third cleanup of the year, reinforced the Army’s role in environmental stewardship and community involvement in Hawai’i. The collective efforts of the Soldiers in beautifying and preserving local areas reflect the U.S. Army’s deep-rooted spirit of service and commitment to environmental stewardship.
